Founded by Orville Gibson in 1894 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Gibson Guitars has become one of the most iconic and influential names in the world of musical instruments. From its early days crafting mandolins to pioneering the archtop guitar, Gibson has consistently pushed the boundaries of guitar design and quality.
In the 1930s, Gibson introduced the ES-150, one of the first commercially available hollow-body electric guitars, which was popularized by jazz guitarist Charlie Christian. The company continued to innovate with the launch of the Gibson Les Paul in 1952, a solid-body electric guitar that has since become legendary. Designed with input from musician Les Paul, this model set a new standard for electric guitars with its versatile tones and robust build.
Gibson's contributions to guitar design didn't stop there. The company introduced the humbucking pickup in the 1950s, which greatly reduced unwanted noise and became a staple in electric guitar technology. Models like the SG, Explorer, and Flying V further cemented Gibson's reputation for innovative and bold designs.
Throughout its history, Gibson has been associated with some of the most famous musicians in the world, including B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. The company’s guitars are celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship, rich tones, and iconic designs, making them a favorite among professional musicians and collectors alike.
Despite facing financial difficulties and changes in ownership, Gibson has remained a leader in the industry, continuing to produce high-quality instruments that inspire and excite guitarists around the globe. Today, Gibson Guitars operates out of Nashville, Tennessee, where it continues to uphold its legacy of excellence and innovation.
This was the "Dave Matthews' guitar before he stopped playing these (and never played them again). A stage-oriented acoustic, that sounds kind of like an acoustic. :).
Regardless, the playability is great, and the look is awesome - sort of like an Everly Brothers with those awesome star inlays!
The SST was made from 1987 to 2006.
The N-225 is not your typical Gibson style guitar. This one is an “open chambered” body with a set neck design. 60’s slim neck profile. 24.75″ scale length. Maple body and neck with a 22- fret Rosewood fingerboard with Block inlays. Diamond inlay on the headstock. All black hardware with Grover tuners, Nashville Tune-O-matic bridge and a Vibrola tremolo tailpiece. The finish is Ebony with a limited edition pin striping done by Rick Harris who is known for striping the Billy Gibbons guitars. P90 in the neck, Dirty Fingers in the bridge.
Not for everyone, but I love it!
