Vox Korean Vintage Reissues

Around 2020, Vox discontinued the Series 55/77 and pivoted to a reissue of the Bobcat — an ES-335-style semi-hollow that was a minor model in Vox's original 1960s lineup and virtually unknown to most players. The choice was puzzling on a few levels: the reissue wasn't a strict reissue but a significantly updated design (set neck replacing the original's bolt-on, Korean manufacturing at a relatively high price point), and the market for ES-335-style guitars is crowded. A teardrop or phantom reissue would seem like the more natural move for a brand with Vox's visual identity. Regardless, the modern Bobcat is a good guitar.

Four versions were offered (2021 pricing):

S66 ($1,850) — Three single-coil pickups. The version closest in spirit to the original 1960s Bobcat.

S66 Bigsby ($2,139) — Adds a Bigsby B70 vibrato; also features blue-toned inlays for a more contemporary look.

V90 ($1,850) — Two Vox V-90 pickups, aesthetically similar to a P90 in appearance.

V90 Bigsby ($2,139) — V90 configuration with the Bigsby B70 added.

Finish availability varied by model: the S66 and V90 came in 3-Tone Sunburst, Cherry Red, Black, Italian Green, and Sapphire Blue (the green is rare in practice); the Bigsby variants were available in Sapphire Blue and Jet Black only.

Playability is excellent and consistent with the Series 55/77 — the two lines were likely produced in the same Korean factory.
