Rickenbacker Desert Gold

Desert Gold was Rickenbacker's Color of the Year for 2001 — the second entry in the program, following Sea Green. A metallic gold considerably lighter in hue than a Gibson goldtop, it sits in unusual territory for a Rickenbacker: warm and metallic rather than the jewel tones and bursts the brand is associated with. Desert Gold is a soft, fine-grain finish — closer to a muted sand-gold than anything shiny or flashy. Actual production ran from 2001 into 2002 as the factory worked through its batch schedule. The collector dynamics around Desert Gold are a study in the difference between rarity and demand. It doesn't really stand out or "pop" — despite being one of the rarer COY colors today, it's also one of the least valuable from the program. Players ordering in 2001 passed on it at a higher rate than other COY finishes, which kept production numbers low — but the color never developed the cult following that Blue Boy or Montezuma Brown did. That makes it genuinely scarce without the corresponding price premium, which is its own kind of opportunity for the right collector.
